If you’re starting a business, it’s very important to find the right business partner. You’re going to try to create this new entity with input from someone else, and they need to be the right person for the job. If you can’t find that person, you may be better off not having a partnership and starting a business on your own.
But say that you’re committed to the idea of being partners. What type of person should you look for?
They should have the same work ethic you do
You may want to start with work ethic. Make sure that they’re just as driven as you are and that the two of you see the business the same way. You want to know that you can trust them to be putting in an equal amount of work, especially if you’re going to get an equal amount of compensation.
They should have skills that you don’t
While they should be similar to you in the sense that they have a good work ethic, it may actually be better if they have skills that you don’t have. This can help your company because it means that the business as a whole has a wider range of skills that it can offer.
They should have a similar vision to you
The two of you may not have exactly the same vision for the company, but it’s important for it to be close. You need to have the same goals that you’re working toward or you need to feel like you’re building the company into the same thing. When you’re on the same page like this, it just makes it easier for the company to thrive.
After you find the right business partner for you, then you need to know how to draft a partnership agreement and other types of contracts.
